’00 A6 4.2L V8. Car has 84xxx mi; OBD Light turned on today while driving, won’t shut off (is wasn’t blinking), decreased HP. Bought the car yesterday and filled up the tank (was very low) with OCT-87… Now I found out I should have used OCT-91. Is the OBD light & decreased HP caused from poor gas quality? Something else? Moreover, should I siphon the gas out & re-fill with premium? AhhhH!!!
Answer:
You should run premium gas in your car but your engine management system is sophisticated enough to run on regular so the grade of gas is most likely not the issue.
You need to see what engine codes were set and go from there. There are about a million and a half things that can cause poor running and the codes will give you somewhere to start looking for the real problem.
Just go to an auto parts store and get some octane booster. You’ll need a mechanic to reset the light, though.
